CONGO IN DILEMMA: DR Congo Worried About UN’s Report Indicating Uganda’s Involvement in Eastern Region War

Democratic Republic of Congo are facing possibly unassailable forces in its quest to regain control of the eastern region as the United Nations (UN) reports that Uganda is the third force joining arms of Rwanda and the M23 rebels in the ongoing war in the eastern region of Congo.

UN’s Security Council recently published their report on the prevailing situation in eastern DR Congo, revealing the role of Uganda in the conflict.

This report raised more concern and further worry over the future of DR Congo in its eastern region as it continues to lose its grip in that part of the country.

On Monday, Minister of Foreign Thérèse Kayikwamba Wagner spoke at a press briefing in Kinshasa where she expressed the government’s worries over the reports about Uganda whom it has collaborated with in other battle fronts.

“We have been conducting Operation Shuuja with the Ugandan armed forces, the UPDF, for over a year now. So we collaborate on many issues, we also collaborate on infrastructure issues in the Beni and Kasindi areas,” Wagner said.

“But obviously we are concerned by this report, we are also concerned by sources from our own services which also indicate similar trends. I think that within the framework of our links which exist between the Democratic Republic of Congo and Uganda, the fairly solid bilateral links which we have, we will raise the issue through diplomatic channels.”

The situation in the east continues to raise international concerns and reinforces the need for a coordinated diplomatic and security response to stabilize the region.
