The Military Court in the Democratic Republic of Congo have sentenced former Independent Electoral Commission (CENI) President and rebel movement leader Corneille Nangaa to death while he remains unbound.
Nangaa continues to roam freely in North Kivu Province having formed a fierce rebel coalition between his Congo River Alliance (AFC) and the M23 rebels who have occupied several cities and towns in the eastern region.
Nangaa who has vowed to rescue the DR Congo from the discriminatory and incompetent leadership of Félix Tshisekedi, was found guilty of war crimes, treason and participation in an insurrectional movement.
The Court highlighted his role as a hierarchical leader in these criminal activities.
The trial, which began on July 24, 2024, saw 25 people prosecuted alongside Nangaa.
