The Military Court in the Democratic Republic of Congo’s North Kivu Province has sentenced to death 25 soldiers fleeing fighting with the M23 rebel group.
On Wednesday, the North Kivu Garrison Court held a flagrant trial in the village of Alimbongo where the 25 soldiers were prosecuted for the dissipation of war munitions, looting and violation of orders.
The soldiers who were overpowered by the rampant M23 fighters in army in the area of Lubero which was later seized by the rebels after the elements of the army opted to flee the area for their lives.
The military court says it has sentenced the soldiers to death in order to discourage other elements fleeing the battle fronts as fighting intensifies.
The M23 rebels are said to have been reinforced its elements and continue to advance into strategic territories of eastern DR Congo.
