CEASEFIRE DISREGARDED: Increased Tensions Reported in North Kivu Despite Agreed Ceasefire

A new wave of intense fighting in the eastern region of the DR Congo has been reported this Tuesday despite the ongoing ceasefire.

Clashes between between the Wazalendo and the M23 rebels broke out this afternoon in new territories of the North Kivu Province.

Local sources have revealed that the M23 have taken control of Kikuvo, a large town in the Lubero territory.

More clashes were also reported earlier this morning on the frontline Bweremana, in Masisi territory.

Socrates, spokesperson for the Wazalendo and A60 group who are sponsored by the government says that the M23 attacked their positions before being pushed back.

Calm has since returned to the territories of this afternoon although the situation remains tense in the region and fears persist over the ability of the ceasefire to hold.
