National Assembly President Vital Kamerhe has started mobilizing funds from the public funds to launch his challenge against Félix Tshisekedi for the presidency.
Kamerhe has been exposed in an embarrassing money embezzlement incident in which he has pocketed US$5 million from the National Assembly treasury for his personal consumption.
According to sources at the National Intelligence Agency (ANR), Kamerhe is said to have order the National Assembly Treasurer Francine Kavira to withdraw money from the Upper House’s account which was loaded into his car in broad daylight last Saturday at Parliament building.
Kamerhe is preparing to contest for president as tensions between him and former ally and seating president Félix Tshisekedi continue to grow.
