The US government has recalled all of its diplomats accredited to the DR Congo following recent attacks on the American embassy in Kinshasa by protestants.
Protestants stormed and attacked the US and other foreign embassies yesterday in demonstrations against the international community whom they accused of siding with Rwanda and the M23 rebels to cause chaos in Goma.
“Due to an increase in violence in the city of Kinshasa, the U.S. Embassy recommends that U.S. citizens shelter in place and depart to safety,” the U.S. Embassy in the DRC said in a message posted on their website.
The US government has since made arranged commercial flights to evacuate its nationals from Kinshasa’s N’Djili International Airport which is still open.
The move could possibly signal dampened relations between the DR Congo and the US which could be a major loss for Kinshasa.
