MEANINGLESS INDEPENDENCE: Katumbi Questions Relevance of DR Congo 64th Independence Anniversary Celebrations

Opposition Ensemble Pour la Republique President Moïse Katumbi has expressed his reservations about the Democratic Republic of Congo’s independence day celebrations in a country still afflicted with several problems due to the incompetent leadership of the Félix Tshisekedi government.

On Sunday 30th June 2024, the DR Congo celebrated its 64th Anniversary since gaining its independence from Belgium in 1960.

However, Katumbi criticized the idea of celebrating independence in the face of current situation in the country where populations continue to endure suffering, particularly those in the eastern region where they have been victims of armed conflict and persistent insecurities.

In a message delivered on Saturday, the former Katanga Governor recalls that the country has been plunged into a major economic and social crisis by the clueless Tshisekedi regime that also compromised in corruption scandals and embezzlement of public funds.

Among other problems he highlighted included lack of proper infrastructure as well a lack of basic services such as drinking water and electricity.

“The Congolese have become beggars in their own country. The Congolese no longer have roads, no longer have electricity, no drinking water,” says the opposition leader.

“My brothers and sisters are being killed every day in the east of the country.”

Katumbi has since called on the Congolese people to invoke the spirit and determination of the country’s fore fathers during the liberation in 1960 and also emphasizes on the need for patriotism.
