WAR IN THE EAST: At Least Five Killed & Several Injured in New M23 Bomb Attacks in Kanyabayonga

At least five civilians, including three women, have been killed with four others badly injured following bombing attacks that have been attributed to M23 rebels who targeted the Kalongo neighborhood this Wednesday, June 19, in the locality of Kanyabayonga (Lubero territory).

According to the military spokesperson in the area, the attackers fired bombs “blindly towards the Kalongo barrier”, which led to the death of these 5 civilians, including a little girl.

Among the injured “two are in critical condition”, adds Lieutenant-Colonel Mak Hazukay, the military spokesperson in the area.

This local administrative authority has also confirmed the tragic events with the deputy mayor of the locality of Kanyabanga also indicating that several residents have fled the localities due to the new wave of shootings.

“Out of 63,247 inhabitants in the commune of Kanyabayonga, only 20% remained. Those who had already returned to the commune also moved today,” explains Muhindo Mungumwa Baraka, deputy mayor of Kanyabayonga.

The M23 have since the start of this week been retaliating to recent attacks launched on them by the Congolese armed forces (FARDC) at their bases.
